This post has somehow turned into a life update.

I am definitely posting a lot less these days. I am well aware of this. I think I only managed one post in September. I have been pretty busy and as I discussed before I had lost some of my motivation. I have been focusing on school work and trying not to heap as much pressure on myself as before. But I’m making the slow return!

I am sure many of you are the same, many of us suffer from this intense fear of failure, that every aspect of our lives must be perfect or successful. I feel that way when it comes to my career or school work. I sometimes heap on the pressure and I have been focusing this last month on NOT doing that.

It’s okay to go at your own pace and try your best. That is what I am trying to learn these days.

Another exciting thing that happened recently was ACQUA ALTA. So I live on the main land of Italy but study and work in Venice, Italy as I am sure is very clear to all who read this blog.

High tides and low tides are caused by the moon. The moon’s gravitational pull generates something called the tidal force. The tidal force causes Earth—and its water—to bulge out on the side closest to the moon and the side farthest from the moon. These bulges of water are high tides

Now what does this mean for Venice? It means that every now and again the tide rises so high that it spills over onto the island. Usually the surrounding islands of Venice are fine and the majority of flooding happens in the low lying parts of Venice like around Piazza san Marco. However, this past weekend was among the worst high tides in modern history which flooded about 70% of the main island and including other islands such as Burano, Giudecca and Lido. Water had reached average human waist length in San Marco (I probably would have drowned) even the most luxurious shops and restaurants were full of water. Imagine people wandering round in thigh high wellies wading through water just to go about their normal day.

As a result school was cancelled, I have been using this time to catch up with other things which may also need my attention in the mean time.

Finally, today is also Halloween and my plans for the evening are not fully finalised. Usually I like to curl up on the sofa with some sweets and a semi scary movie or a good book but today, I will be out and about in a lacklustre costume in the cold October evening praying that Venice doesn’t flood and that it doesn’t rain.

Wish me luck.

Happy Halloween!
